depending on your topology and security systems, they can be completely blocked. some firewalls, if placed in the correct part of the network can let the admin know if an intrusion is being attempted. at that point, you manually block the intruder. the better way is to install and IDS at several points, the best in your case being in the network where the www access and your firewall reside. the IDS can then be setup to automatically block any intruder, even they change sources. if you're really worried, unplug from the web until you get a more secure system.
